Blueberries are small, sweet and a little tart, and they are one of the more demanding crops to grow well.
The plants need acidic soil, so they are usually grown in pots or beds filled with a special growing mix instead of ordinary soil, and they need regular, careful watering. The berries on a single plant ripen over several weeks, so the pickers come back to the same plants again and again and take only the berries that are ready.
The pale, waxy layer on the skin is completely natural and protects the fruit, which is why blueberries are best washed only just before eating.
